One Perfect Day at... Larimer Square

Denver has been around since 1858, but you can trace the Mile High City back to one block: Larimer Square. Today, the city’s first historic district blends LoDo’s Victorian buildings with independent shops, some of Denver’s best restaurants, and, of course, the block’s signature canopy of overhead lights. Here’s your guide to the best Larimer has to offer.

9:30 a.m.: Coffee at Huckleberry Roasters

Start your morning at Huckleberry Roasters, which occupies a bright, minimalist space that serves as a modern counterpoint to the square’s Victorian architecture. Huckleberry is a Denver stalwart, and this cafe is the perfect spot for a cup of Blue Orchid—Huckleberry’s original house espresso blend—and a pastry before the neighboring boutiques open.

12:30 p.m.: Lunch at Osteria Marco

Head downstairs from street-level to Osteria Marco for lunch. Located in the basement of one of the square’s historical buildings, this spot offers a refined take on Italian food in a space removed from the midday street bustle. The restaurant is known for its house-made burrata and extensive salumi program, and the exposed brick makes for a warm, convivial environment.

1:30 p.m.: The Boutique Walk

The retail landscape on Larimer Square leans into independent, high-design boutiques. Start at Coco + Grace for contemporary women’s apparel, then visit Milly Rose for specialized jewelry and accessories—and the famous hat bar. For unique, artisan pieces—think clutches, bags, rugs, and scarves—Chebet Mutai’s selection of handmade clothing and leather goods has you covered. Conclude your loop at Garage Sale Vintage, which offers curated vintage clothing alongside a cocktail bar, making it the perfect spot if you like to have a beverage in hand while you browse the racks.

6:00 p.m.: Cocktails at Emerald Eye

This subterranean tropical cocktail bar is a departure from the Victorian aesthetic of Larimer and specializes in rum-forward drinks and tropical flavors. Emerald Eye’s interior features lush, vibrant accents that contrast sharply with the historic brick outside, making it an ideal place to ease into the evening.

8:00 p.m.: Dinner at Rioja or Tamayo

Larimer Square is home to two of Denver’s culinary icons, both of which are perfect for leisurely, chef-driven dinners. Rioja delivers elevated Mediterranean cuisine from James Beard Award–winning chef Jennifer Jasinski’s team, with an open kitchen showcasing wood-fired specialties like lamb chops and seasonal pastas.

Tamayo offers a modern Mexican experience with inventive ceviches, barbacoa quesabirria, and agave-spirit cocktails in a sleek, vibrant space. When the weather permits, check out the rooftop deck for views of the city and the Front Range.

Before You Go

  • The Canopy Lights: The signature overhead lights run on a timer and typically turn on around sunset. The blue hour window—just after the sun goes down and as the sky deepens in color—is the best time for taking photos on the block, with the warm lights balancing the remaining sky color.
  • Parking Logistics: Valet parking is available at several restaurants and is often the easiest choice on busy weekend nights. If you prefer to self-park, consider the Larimer Square Garage on Market Street.
  • Historical Detail: Take a moment to read the plaques near building entrances, which detail the specific preservation efforts of the 1960s that saved this block from demolition, turning it into the city’s first historic district.
